You’ve seen it quoted from Sunday’s pulpits, loudly proclaimed on the walls of Ivy League universities and public libraries. You’ve listened to it being piously rehearsed by so-called public servants, and seen the wise words of Confucius in your Friday night fortune cookie: “The truth shall set you free.”
Let’s repeat that: The truth shall set you free. Now that is the truth. If I hear a politician bridge his words with, “to be perfectly honest …”, “I’m being totally candid …” or “you deserve to expect total transparency …”, I can safely assume that what follows is a creative writing exercise.
