In only a couple of months, our great American democratic experiment will be celebrating its 250th anniversary. Based on the most recent, zealous attempts to derail all sense of fairness in national elections—led by the GOP—we can be sure of one thing: America is still an “experiment,” and it’s definitely not a “democracy.”

While our leaders champion democracy abroad, the reality at home is a system that is failing to survive the weight of its own inequities. How can the U.S. be a global flag-bearer for freedom if it hasn’t figured out how to make every citizen’s vote count?
