Opinion
For many Latter-day Saints, Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf is a favorite. Currently the ranking president of the faith’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Uchtdorf is known for his kindness, compassion and enigmatic charm. Uchtdorf was the first non-U.S.-born Apostle in the post-World War II church, the period that historian Greg Prince labels as “modern Mormonism.”
He was born in what is now the Czech Republic in 1940 and, four years later, his family fled as refugees to East Germany.
