Great Expectations Ronald Reagan pioneered the “make America great again” idea before Donald Trump got ahold of it. Reagan said the American people needed to “believe in our capacity to perform great deeds.” Reagan was clearly speaking about actions—including personal, economic, local, state and national policy deeds.

Contrast this with Trump’s definition of greatness as monuments to his own personal greatness, like huge graven images of himself hanging from government buildings, his proposed “triumphal” arch in Washington D.C. and the half billion-dollar renovation of the East Wing.
