When I was a kid, my mother taught me fundamental truths. One of those was the incessantly-repeated admonition, “Mikey, brush your teeth well. You need them for chewing and, of course, to smile.” This was invariably followed by: “Look at your Grandma Olga. She’s 68 years old and still has all her natural teeth because she was a good brusher.”

It wasn’t until I was nearly an adult that I discovered the truth: Grandma Olga didn’t have a single natural tooth left in her smile. She’d been sporting a full set of dentures since her early sixties. What does a kid do when he’s been lied to by parents?
