Growing up during the Cold War, our morning cereal was usually served with a side of impending doom. The routine was a steady stream of "Duck and Cover" drills and the cheerful reminder that the Soviet Union had enough nuclear power to blow us all to smithereens.
Back then, we looked at the USSR and saw a strange, chiseled world where the Leader’s face was the only available wallpaper. His visage was draped over apartment blocks and etched into granite, a stern Big Brother watching over bread lines. In the U.S., we were far more modest.
