This is a short article on love, written as a reflection about Valentine’s Day. A career in higher education taught me that we teachers tend to teach what we need to learn. And like most of us, I continue to learn about love. Freud wrote that we are never as defenseless against suffering as when we enter romance.

Perhaps that is because one must become vulnerable to love, and vulnerability makes us feel, well, vulnerable. I have noticed that many of my clients and students refer to former partners as being borderline or narcissistic. I’ve done the same, maybe most of us have.
