But while the tunnel keeps most children safe from car traffic, Julia Lyon explained Monday, the underground option isn't accessible to students using wheelchairs, crutches and other mobility devices.
Lyon said the school community worked hard to develop plans for a safe, accessible crossing on South Temple, and was close to starting construction.
