We searched the New Mexico desert in a long, jagged line as the sun bore down on us. The thorns from the dense mesquite and catclaw acacia tore at my feet and ankles. I wasn’t dressed appropriately for the search—gym shorts, t-shirt and sneakers—but I stayed silent and slogged along, trying to keep pace with the other volunteers.
When we staged for the search earlier that morning, we’d heard large-caliber gunfire nearby. Driving to the search site on a narrow dirt road, we were buzzed by a white Border Patrol helicopter, which returned 20 minutes later to monitor our position.
