I realized later in life that I was queer and started to explore the local LGBTQ community more intentionally. I appear younger than I am (Black don’t crack), so when I showed up to these spaces, it looked like I fit in with the mid-20s and early-30s crowd. Often, I was either the only Black person or one of a small few, and felt doubly out of place.
I was like Lady Amalthea in Peter Beagle’s novel, trying to figure out whether she was the last unicorn roaming the earth. Where were my people hiding? It got me thinking that if I feel this way, how many others feel the same?
