Especially on Father’s Day, we remember that every society tells its men a story about who they are supposed to be. Growing up a boy in Chicago in the 1950s, the rules about manhood seemed clear. Our fathers took the commuter train to the Loop every morning, often to a job they did not like, frequently to pay for a world they silently felt trapped in.
The worst thing a boy could do, we learned on the playground, was to be a “sissy.” Then came the expression and liberation culture of the 1960s. Since those days, we still live in a transition time with multiple and often contradictory stories.
