The latest franchise installment forgets to connect the experience of play to the experience of being human.
Toy Story 5 Disney Pixar At the risk of re-stating the obvious: The Toy Story movies have never really been toy stories. Through the initial, near-perfect trilogy that dealt with the passing of real time, the filmmakers understood the role of play in the way children make sense of the new feelings they are encountering all the time.
And while the surprisingly effective Toy Story 4 made a shift in perspective so that Woody, Buzz and company were more stand-ins for parental anxieties than childhood ones, there was a fundamental metaphor that remained in place.
