An attempt to follow up a comedy masterpiece turns into a nostalgia act
I'm inclined to believe that This Is Spinal Tap was nothing less than a filmmaking miracle. The 1984 feature—a “mockumentary” following a fading British heavy metal band on an ill-fated tour in support of their latest album—plays out as an utterly improbable combination of run-with-it improv prompt, hilarious musical parody and genuinely touching exploration of creative tensions between best friends.
It shouldn't have been possible for all of those things to work together at all, let alone becoming one of the greatest film comedies of all time.
