James L. Brooks has nothing to prove to anyone. At the age of 85, his legacy includes co-creating The Mary Tyler Moore Show , Taxi and The Simpsons ; winning multiple Academy Awards for Terms of Endearment ; and generally being the heartbeat of heartfelt comedy for (at least) two generations.
So if he was going to come out of semi-retirement to make Ella McCay his first feature in 15 years, you’d think it would be because he had something in particular to say about our moment. But if so, I’ll be damned if I could tell you what it is.
